turn it up winters: Frosh week 2019

Above is a digitally displayed version of our Instagram pages layout, and right above that is a digital mock-up of our 2019 Turn It Up Winters Frosh Week schedule! The schedule itself, along with every other piece of design related content for the 2019 Frosh Week was put together by myself and my Media Team. We had around three months of preparation time which was consistent with weekly meetings and followups with the Orientation Chairs at the time!

turn it up: winters frosh kit MERCHANDISE

When it came to branding merchandise for the week, York University has standard regulations in terms of what needs to be displayed; position, logo, and university they attend. This spans standard for all Universities in the area - Leaders wore red.

Branded similarly to our leader shirts, the Frosh had their own set of tee’s in their own color: white. This gave Frosh a chance to decorate their shirts and express their personalities while also posing as a bit of a nod towards their “fresh start” at their new Uni!

Winters Frosh Week (Turn It Up 2019) is the ultimate way to introduce incoming Students to their future home; Winters and York University! Having experienced undergraduate students as guides, Frosh Orientation week helps make York’s large campus seem just a little bit smaller and much more familiar! Outside of being a tourist in your own city Frosh thrives as a once-in-a-lifetime experience and a memorial kick-off to your future as a Student!

“Turn It Up Winters, themed after Music, had an identity based on being bold, confident and radiating empowerment. The design team made this vision reality, with a bold logo, that implodes with confidence. I love the color red and pastel/softer colors. The schedule and our other promotional material took this identity. I could not be prouder of this team!”

-Rividu Mendis, Orientation Chair 2019

When it came down to additional merchandise, outside of mandatory t-shirts everyone participating in the week would have to wear, we stuck to York’s standard Frosh kit sets; Drawstring Bags, branded Sunglasses, Lanyards, Buttons and Bandannas! These stayed cohesive with our social media branding, the Instagram layout can be seen below the week schedule at the top of the page, and finalized logo mock! The buttons were a request from our heads of Health and Safety which we were able to design and produce for them, promoting all forms of heath, including mental health, right before the week was underway!
Below are a few of our video promotion projects are was heavily involved in!

take on winters: frost week 2019

Above is a digitally displayed version of our Instagram pages layout, and right above that is a digital mock-up of our 2019 Tune In Winters Frost Week schedule! For context, Frost week is a spin off of the Universities Frosh Week at the beginning of the term. Frost week takes place exactly halfway through the semester encouraging new students to continue to socialize within their Arts College! The schedule itself, along with every other piece of design related content for the 2019 Frost Week was my first, large-scale, design project when it came to Orientation-esk events! I had around two weeks of preparation time which was consistent with meetings when requested and followups with the VP So-Cul, VP Internal Affairs, and President of the College at the time!

The Absinthe Pub & Coffee Shop has been part of the Winters community since the early 70's. Owned by Winters College Council, we strive to build a safe and entertaining place for Winters students to go to and call their second home! The Ab is currently the last remaining Student-run Pub on the York University Campus - frequently filled with the WC Arts student Ab Rats!

Following my term on the WCC, I became associated with the Manager of the Pub who later approached me - asking if I’d be interested in designing the infamous Absinthe T-shirts! I happily accepting and have been working with him for the last two years!

winters formal: the met gala reign 2019

On April 5th 2019, the 2018/ 19 Winters College Council hosted their annual Formal for their Arts constituents! With the theme being; The Met Gala: Reign based off of VOGUE Magazines very own Met Gala. 💃

After a plethora of face-to-face meetings with the WCC’s Vice President of Social and Cultural Affairs we quickly narrowed down her vision and feel of what the Formals “brand” would look like. Sticking closely to the VOGUE aesthetic but also putting our own spin on things. We kept promotional byline fonts similar to the VOGUE font, while headers were a brush-esk font emphasized with our own gold texturing! Color pallets stayed consistent through the branding and even the video production process as we used stills from set as background promotions - this kept everything extremely consistent!

Illustrations for the event featured a custom crown, designed to the specifications of the VP So-Cul.

Above are process images of the illustration design process for the REIGN, followed by three square social promotional images we used prior to the formal event directly under the process. Below this caption is our teaser trailer/ music video we used to promote the Gala publicly - this was premiered at the Absinthe Pub and Coffee Shop at one of the Colleges infamous Pub nights! Directly under the trailer are three more “story posts” we had prepared for our socials!

Winters College Council overall END-NOTES 🤟

From my First-year of University to my Second, and now my Third (Late 2017- Late 2020) I’ve worked for York Universities Winters College Council as a Commuter Representative, Promotions Director, and Frosh Leader!
My roles and responsibilities spanned from being a public representative of the University and Arts College, being an advocate for Student Life on campus, catered Promotions-related material towards constituents, and then some! I’ve been a leader for a plethora of detail-heavy projects spanning from: 2018 Council Year-wide Promotions, The Met Gala: Reign Formal 2019, 2018 Frost Week, 2019 Turn It Up Winters Frosh Week, and then some!

The position(s) also managed partial promotions for the Colleges on-campus Pub and their magazine: The Absinthe Pub and Coffee Shop as well as The Artichoke.

So I ask; what‘s it like to be apart of a community so passionate and indulged in the Arts such as Winters? Breathtaking, Inspiring, and Iridescent.
The Winters Community is build on a solidified foundation which is Acceptance and Inclusivity. However, Winters is more than just a building, as without its people it would be just that: a bare-building waiting to be filled.
On that note, I didn’t want my thanks towards Winters, and it’s community, to go left unsaid. Thank you for opening me up, helping me find self-love, showing me that I am worth it, and making my University experience worth while. Thank you for the friends you helped introduce me to, the connections you’ve helped me make, and the memories I will never forget. To my once colleagues I am more than proud to call friends, thank you for being you.
Thank you. #WinWhat?!
